PREMA Theodore Racing had a consistent beginning in the second round of the 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Lining-up at the technical Hungaroring venue, the team comfortably led practice and posted good results in the opening qualifying session, electing to save tires by doing only one run.
With high temperatures but a threatening sky which never turned into a rainfall, Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou posted a third place in today’s qualifying 1 and he will share the second row with Mick Schumacher. The other Prema drivers qualified from P5 to P7. Rounding out the top-5, New Zealander Marcus Armstrong was the best rookie in front of team-mate and fellow debutant Robert Shwartzman. Ralf Aron scored P7.

“After Practice, we were looking good. Top three is ok for the first race as the others had two sets of tires to use, and I think we’re in a good position to fight for pole tomorrow. I’m pretty happy even if I made some small mistakes so I did not put everything together. The car feels good and we are looking really strong this weekend.”

“Fourth place is a positive result for race 1 as the pace seems quite OK. We had to deal with some understeer in qualifying but I tried to compensate it with driving and we got a second-row start. I look forward to some battling, everything is possible. I will try to make the most out of it.”

“In free practice, there was something wrong with the brakes and we were struggling. Then we changed, and at the beginning of the qualifying session, there was a bit of a vibration so I couldn’t do my usual procedure. Then in the end when I was improving I missed a bit of confidence in the car. If it stays dry, the race will be one of the tightest of the year, but personally, I wouldn’t mind some rain.”

Qualifying 1: P5 Fastest lap: 1’35”489
“Quali was OK. I think the cars are strong which is a bit frustrating because we could have been pretty much on the front row or even pole. Maybe I did my lap a little bit too late because the tire degradation is pretty high with these temperatures. I guess I learned that for tomorrow.”

“Qualifying didn’t go bad at all although I’m not 100% satisfied with the result as we could have done a little better, probably top-3, I made a mistake in what could have been my best lap. We have to look at the data to see where we can improve to fight at the front tomorrow.
