Red Bull Junior Pierre Gasly delivered a stunning qualifying performance at Yas Marina Circuit to claim his fifth GP2 Series pole position of the season.

Qualifying took place at dusk, under artificial lights, at the majestic Emirates venue in preparation for Saturday’s early evening Feature Race which gets underway at 18:40 local time. Pierre Gasly made good use of his super soft Pirelli tyres, setting a personal best lap time of 1:47.476 and claiming pole position on his first attempt. The young Frenchman looked set to improve further on his second run, but a lock-up under braking prevented him from reducing his lap time.

Team-mate and championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi was less fortunate, finding traffic in sector three on his fastest lap, forcing him to settle for sixth place on the Feature Race grid.

The impressive qualifying performance also sees Gasly reduce his championship deficit to Giovinazzi to just three points.

“Qualifying wasn’t really fantastic. I faced lots of traffic so I never had the chance to put a lap together but P6 for tomorrow isn’t really far from Pierre. He is on pole but we have two long races in front of us so there is still a lot we can do. We will see how it goes tomorrow…”

It has been a fantastic day with a superb performance and a pole position in qualifying. I’m just really happy about how the session went. The car was perfect and I could do everything I wanted with it, pushing very hard while still being comfortable. When I crossed the line and saw the lap time I didn’t expect it even though I knew that we were really good. It was one of the best laps in my GP2 career and it feels great to have put it all together here. I want to thank the team for the unbelievable car they provided me with. I hope we will carry on tomorrow and keep the same pace during the race.
