Points finish in the last race of the FIA Formula 2 Season with fifth for Nyck de Vries

The 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship ended up with another points finish for PERTAMINA PREMA Theodore Racing at Abu Dhabi. In the series finale held at the unique Yas Marina track, Dutchman Nyck De Vries scored a fifth place adding more points to his name after yesterday’s fourth position in the feature race. In a pretty linear run, except for a contact on the opening lap which involved team-mate Sean Gelael, the 23-year-old racer remained in the top-5 and managed his tires. He ended fourth overall in the championship standings.

Gelael, unfortunately, had a much shorter day on-track. The Indonesian was involved in the aforementioned contact and forced to retire. PERTAMINA PREMA Theodore Racing ended up fifth in the team standings and is ready to start the preparations for 2019 in the coming round of collective testing at Yas Marina.

“Good first half of the lap, then the guys were scrambling in front and I think car #18 came back on the track. He could have not moved as much as he did, but he forced me to take avoiding action to the left. When I braked, I was too much on the dirty side already and I could not stop the car. So what I think was an unnecessary movement destroyed our race and somebody else’s.”

“Unfortunately we just didn’t seem to have the race pace this weekend. That considered, we did a really good weekend. We did a step from free practice, good qualifying, good starts, and everyone did a really good job. The pit-stop and the strategy were good too. It’s a bit of a shame that we didn’t finish our last weekend together on a high. Nevertheless, we scored good points and I got my super license points too which is a nice achievement.”

Theodore Racing Managing Director, David Kennedy,

“Nyck has shown real speed this year winning at Le Castellet, Budapest and Spa. With his front row qualifying performance yesterday we hoped for at least a podium, but with two top five places he has ended the season positively. Having won this year’s FIA F3 and F4 Championships it has been another outstanding year. Full preparations are now underway for 2019 across not only Formula 2 but also the other Championships. Thank you to our sponsors and loyal partner BBIN for their support this season.”
