Elation for Pierre Gasly who is crowned 2016 GP2 Series champion at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
The fight for the GP2 Series drivers’ title went down to the wire, with the Theodore Racing / Prema teammates pushing each other all the way to the chequered flag in Sunday’s Sprint Race.
GP2 rookie Antonio Giovinazzi came in to the season finale with a seven point lead over Red Bull Junior Pierre Gasly, but the Frenchman soon took control of the weekend by claiming pole position and victory in Saturday’s Feature Race.
The battle continued into Sunday’s Sprint Race but Giovinazzi was unable to recover the 12 point deficit, enabling Gasly to claim the coveted GP2 drivers’ championship just eight points ahead of his teammate.
The team has achieved phenomenal success in its maiden GP2 season, claiming both the teams’ and drivers’ titles.
Pierre Gasly “So we are champions, it’s unbelievable, it feels amazing finally after such a long season. A great and long fight with Antonio to get the title at the last race. It’s just mega so I just want to thank the team for all the hard work all season. It wasn’t easy every race but we just kept fighting until the end, until the last weekend and we got it!”
I’m really lost for words to describe how I feel now. I want to thank my family as well as all the friends and the people who supported me all season and always believed in me. Thank you to Red Bull and the team for the opportunity because this would have not been possible without them. Congrats to the whole team for the hard work during the season and for finishing 1-2 in the championship in their maiden season. Now it’s time to enjoy the celebrations with everybody involved and look forward to the future.”
Antonio Giovinazzi “It’s been a tough weekend but I think I can be really satisfied with how this season went. It provided the team with huge success and enabled me to show I was able to fight for the title until the last race of my rookie year.
I want to congratulate Pierre on winning the title and thank the team for their work in this outstanding season .”
Teddy Yip Jr. commented “What a result for the team, Pierre and Antonio today. We are overjoyed to see Pierre take the GP2 drivers’ championship but we also have to remember what an impressive rookie season Antonio has had. To end the year as not only team champions but also 1-2 in the drivers’ championship is quite remarkable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Angelo and Rene Rosin for their hard work and dedication, not only in GP2 but Formula 3 and Formula 4.
Our success this season would not have been possible without the support of our partners, in particular BBIN and the Macao Government Tourism office.
We have all enjoyed an amazing year and long may the success continue.”
