The tough weekend for PERTAMINA PREMA Theodore Racing at the Red Bull Ring continued today in race 1 of the FIA Formula 2 Championship at the Austrian venue, as the team was hit by external circumstances with both drivers. Despite the progress made in terms of performance, with a good outlook for the feature race, Nyck De Vries was forced to retire when one contender nudged his right rear tire causing him a puncture. The team elected to save one set of option tires and stopped him for good in an already jeopardized race.
On the other hand, Sean Gelael, who was following the same strategy with a longer initial stint on prime, was penalized by two safety car situations, one of which bunched up the field during the early part of the race. After exiting the pits at the back of the pack, the Indonesian ended up in 14th place.
Qualifying: P15 Fastest lap: 1:14.363
Race 1: P14 Fastest lap: 1:18.257
“We just had the wrong strategy considering what happened during the race. Our pace was good, we were competitive and hopefully, I think there’s still something in the bag for tomorrow. We saw that there is some degradation during the race so I think tomorrow’s one can be another interesting race with three DRS zones.”
Nyck De Vries
Qualifying: P9 Fastest lap: 1:14.171
Race 1: DNF Fastest lap: 1:19.531
“I thought I had all the devils off my shoulders after Paul Ricard’s qualifying, but turns out there were a few left. What can I say, we didn’t do anything wrong, everything was OK. I think someone tapped me when I was at the apex of turn 3 and that caused a puncture. As we started on primes, we couldn’t continue otherwise we would have compromised tomorrow’s race.”
